John Calder presents The Godot Company

The Godot Company...is doing something different!

The Godot Company is a company of actors who came together with John Calder – Beckett’s principal publisher – to perform accessible productions of some of the most significant plays of the twentieth century.

The members of this ensemble are:

Sergio Amigo; Virginia Byron; Karin Fernald; Tim Hardy; Tamara Hinchco; Michael Howarth; Anthony Jackson; Oengus MacNamara; Peter Marinker; Jim McManus; Peter Pacey; Tony Rohr; and Alison Skilbeck. (The company is subject to changes and additions.)

The Godot Company also includes John Calder (administrator) with Ralph Petty (designer), Katherine James, David Wm. Palmer & Joanne Walby (stage managers), Meckie Offermanns (fundraising) and Karen Wentworth (Alexander Technique advisor) as associate members.

Why so many actors when the play only has 4 adult roles?

This is so that any one of us can remain available for other work without endangering the Godot project - we each learn two of the roles and are, in effect, each other's understudies. The added advantages are the extensive understanding of the script, an even chance to fully explore each part, an intimate insight of all the characters, and a more complete comprehension of their inter-relationships. It is intended that the Godot Company should be a permanent ensemble performing Waiting for Godot and other plays by Beckett as well as other projects as decided by the members. It will tour British and foreign theatrical outlets and is willing to make its work available to schools and other venues.

Members of the company take turns directing rehearsals. As directorial guides, we have Beckett’s extensive personal production notes for Waiting for Godot including his notes from the production at the Schiller Theatre. Added to this, the fact that his text is so specific, and of course the advantage of John Calder's personal acquaintance with Beckett and his work, all help to steer us in the right direction. The standard is kept high by our experienced and talented cast, all working together and sharing our ideas and observations.

We invite you to come more than once and experience individual actors’ performances and their unique interpretation of these iconic characters and their personal contribution to this 20th century masterpiece. This is a unique concept and a challenge for you in that the cast can, and often does, change from week to week.
